The Summer of Sangailé
A film by Alanté Kavaïté
🇱🇹 Lithuania / France / Netherlands 2014
📀 88 minutes
💬 Original Lithuanian version with German subtitles
Wild loops, weightless above the clouds. Seventeen-year-old Sangailé is afraid of heights, but she dreams of flying. While on vacation with her parents, she spends every free minute at the airfield, but she doesn’t dare to fly herself. At an air show, she is suddenly approached by the pretty Auste, who works there as a hostess. Auste is incredible: self-assured, daring—and the first person who truly understands Sangailé and her fears. Friends become lovers. And by the end of the summer, Sangailé dares to do things that previously seemed impossible to her.
Alanté Kavaïté’s film uses vibrant imagery to tell the story of first great love—and how it’s what truly makes you grow up. For her tender and playful love story set against the backdrop of the fairy-tale-like Baltic landscape, Kavaïté was awarded the Best Director prize at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival.
